The future of South African magic is set to take centre stage when the Magicana Junior Magic Championships return to Cape Town on Saturday, October 3 at the District Six Homecoming Centre.
Nine finalists from the Claremont-based College of Magic, a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing the next generation of magical performers, will compete for top honours.
According to the College of Magic, the young finalists have been working hard to prepare their acts and are ready to showcase their skills in front of a live audience.
Two spectacular finals
The championships will feature two finals, allowing audiences to experience both close-up and stage magic.
The Close-Up Magic final will take place at 2.30pm, followed by the Stage Magic final at 6pm.
Audiences can expect everything from impossible card miracles performed just inches away to ambitious stage illusions designed to leave spectators asking, “How on earth did they do that?”
More than just magic
College of Magic creative director Chad Findlay said the championships provide an exciting opportunity to watch young performers discover their potential.
“What makes the Junior Magic Championships so exciting is that you get to see young performers discovering what they are capable of,” he said.
Findlay said the young magicians are learning much more than tricks and illusions.
“They’re learning how to think creatively, communicate, overcome challenges and connect with an audience,” he said.
For the finalists, he said, the competition represents more than simply competing for a trophy.
“It is an opportunity to step into the spotlight, test themselves against their peers and experience the thrill of performing magic for a live audience,” he said.
Catch tomorrow’s stars
Findlay said the championships offer audiences a rare opportunity to see young magical talent before they potentially become household names.
The event forms part of the College of Magic’s ongoing commitment to nurturing young magical talent in South Africa.
The Magicana Junior Magic Championships take place at the Homecoming Centre’s Star Theatre on Saturday October 3, from 2.30pm.
